Aneurysms: In the clip below it's possible to see an animation of an Endovascular repair of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (EVAR). This is otherwise known as a stent graft and is one way of excluding the aneurysm from the circulation.

An Aneurysm is quite simply a dilated blood vessel. As the blood vessel dilates there's an increasing risk of rupture. Not surprisingly the risk of rupture is related to the absolute size of the aneurysm but also to the rate of increase in size. In the UK approximately 5% of the male population over the age of 65 have an aneurysm. A number of trials in the UK, Australia and the United States have reported the benefits of screening at risk populations in an attempt to reduce the mortality and morbidity associated with rupture. At Christchurch Vascular Group (Our Sister site) we offer advice, investigation and the treatment of aneurysmal disease. Please don't hesitate to contact me or one of my colleagues at Christchurch Vascular group to discuss any questions you may have. If you want peace of mind a simple screening ultrasound scan may exclude the possibility of a life threatening aneurysm.
